From January 1, 2026, access to VID EDS will be possible only with secure electronic identification means

The State Revenue Service of Latvia (VID) has announced significant changes regarding the Electronic Declaration System (EDS). From January 1, 2026, users will only be able to log in with secure authentication methods, meaning that the current option of using a username and password will be completely discontinued.

Current situation

At present, EDS can be accessed in several ways:

  • with eParaksts mobile;
  • with an eID card and card reader;
  • via internet banking;
  • or with a username and password.

The last option remains popular among many residents but is the least secure.

What will change in 2026?

From January 2026, password login will no longer be available. Instead, users will have to choose one of the following three secure options:

  1. eParaksts mobile – a mobile application that allows secure authentication and electronic signing of documents.
  2. eID card – Latvia’s official electronic identification card, used with a card reader.
  3. Internet banking – available for customers of Swedbank, SEB, Citadele, Luminor, and others.

Why are these changes necessary?

VID explains that the goal is to strengthen cybersecurity and protect taxpayers’ data. Passwords can be weak, reused, stolen, or hacked. In contrast, eParaksts and eID cards use advanced encryption, ensuring reliable identity verification.

The change will also improve integration between EDS and other Latvian e-government services, making the overall digital ecosystem more user-friendly and secure.

Who will be affected?

These changes will impact:

  • individuals submitting annual tax returns or requesting certificates;
  • self-employed persons and entrepreneurs;
  • companies and their representatives;
  • accountants working on behalf of multiple clients.

What should users do now?

To prepare for the transition, VID recommends:

  1. Download and activate eParaksts mobile – the fastest and easiest method.
  2. Apply for an eID card if you don’t already have one.
  3. Ensure your internet banking service can be used for government login.
  4. Test the new login method in 2025 to avoid disruptions in 2026.

From January 1, 2026, access to EDS will only be possible via eParaksts mobile, eID card, or internet banking. VID urges all users to prepare in advance, choose the most convenient option, and ensure uninterrupted and secure access to Latvia’s tax services.
